At Bastion

No Veteran Heals Alone

Bastion began as America’s first intentional community for disabled veterans and families, in the historic Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans.

Today, Bastion serves veterans all across New Orleans and beyond: we launched our first satellite program in San Antonio in 2025 and kicked off 2026 by opening a new Veteran Wellness Center in New Orleans, available to any local veteran who needs our support.

This Veteran Wellness Center serves as a hub of resources and social connection, anchoring our constantly growing veteran community and creating opportunities for partner organizations to provide services directly to our veterans.

.

Our nation’s veterans are facing a crisis: we lose 44 veterans per day to suicide and other self-induced causes. No veteran should fight the battle against loneliness or isolation alone after serving their country.

COMMUNITY

Healing

At Bastion, we use community as the healing ground to help veterans rediscover a sense of identity, belonging, and purpose in their post-military lives. The meaningful relationships built between veterans at Bastion serve as the fabric of our community and the fuel for sustainable growth.

Progress

We view community building as both the means and measure of progress – increased social connectedness leads to decreased loneliness and isolation, epidemics that continue to claim veteran lives.

Support

Our dedicated staff provides veterans with cost-free resources, programs, and clinical services tailored to their individual needs. In addition to these evidence-backed offerings, the greatest resource our veterans have is each other.

Whether you’re a veteran who needs support or a veteran looking to find purpose and connection through supporting others, Bastion is here for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Absolutely not! Our community is constantly growing and includes veterans from all over New Orleans, surrounding parishes, a cohort of Headway participants in San Antonio, plus their families and support systems. There are lots of ways to get involved at Bastion – you can visit our event calendar, inquire about joining a program, or visit us on Mirabeau Avenue to learn more about our community and how we can support you as a veteran. We’re always looking for volunteers so if you have a specific skillset, resource, or interest that could serve other veterans, get in touch with our team.

Bastion is a nonprofit organization that provides cost-free services, resources, and programming for veterans who live in our original residential community on Mirabeau Avenue, plus countless other veterans living all across New Orleans and beyond. Bastion does not own or manage the housing units in our community, we just provide the services and support that help these veterans thrive. Renaissance Property Group owns the residential units at Bastion. Units are managed by Cohen Esrey, a property management company who handles leasing, maintenance, onsite repairs, and all other housing related issues or concerns. Bastion serves all veterans seeking support and community in their post-military lives, regardless of disability status or discharge status. Many of our programs, services, and aspects of our model of care were created with injured or disabled veterans in mind, especially those navigating layered, complex, and/or invisible wounds. However, our community has demonstrated transformational impacts for veterans regardless of what conditions they may or may not be facing. Our holistic approach and targeted programming promote all kinds of wellness: physical, mental, social, financial, nutritional, and more. No veteran heals alone, and no matter what challenges you encounter in post-military life, Bastion is here to help you through it.
